Description

Historic building where the Portuguese parliament now meets

Palacio de São Bento (São Bento Palace) was once a Benedictine monastery. It was built on the site of an older monastic facility in the 17th century. It became the home of the Portuguese parliament (Assembleia da República) in the 19th century after the monastic orders were dissolved.

Palacio de São Bento was has been remodeled several times over the years. It is close to the Bairro Alto district. Demonstrators often congregate in the front of the building. A new annex to the building opened in 1999. The Prime Minister's mansion is located directly behind this building.
