Description

National military museum was originally a royal army arsenal

Museu Nacional Militar once served as the arsenal for the royal army. The current building was rebuilt under the orders of José I after previous buildings were destroyed by fire and an earthquake. The site has been a museum since 1851.

Museu Nacional Militar has a large collection of historical artillery. In addition, there are paintings, sculpture, tile, and other artwork. There is also a shop and a cafeteria. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. There is a reduced admission for children ages two through eight. Children under two are admitted free.
