One of Europe's leading modern art collections
Inaugurated in 2007, this showcase for the vast collection of Madeiran-born magnate José 'Joe' Berardo was visited by half a million people in its first year (free admission helped).
The 450 pieces on show include Duchamps, Picassos, Warhols, Bacons and works by Portugal's own Paula Rego. The Museu Colecção Berardo also hosts visiting exhibitions, while the sister Museu de Arte Moderna in Sintra organises smaller shows.
