Description

Historic church at the birthplace of St. Anthony of Padua

Igreja de Santo António is a historic church that was built on the site of the birthplace of the patron saint of Portugal, St. Anthony of Padua. St. Anthony is also the patron saint of brides. There is a special celebration here each year on St. Anthony's day, which is June 12th.

Igreja de Santo António was built in the mid-18th century and rebuilt after it was damaged by an earthquake in the early 19th century. The elegant church building combines the Baroque with the Neoclassical Ionic style. The church grounds include a small museum with several artifacts.
